gifts for hire

So everyone's been telling me I should start an Etsy shop and sell stuff that I make. I would definitely like to, but it's gonna take a bit of time. First, I have to make enough merchandise to open a shop. Then I have to price out shipping so that I can price items accurately. I also need to do some research to see what other people charge so that I don't under or over-sell things.

Anyway, late last night I had A BRILLIANT IDEA. While I'm waiting to start my online shop I can make things for friends around here! This way I can save up some money to buy supplies for the "real stuff" I'll make to sell on Etsy. So, feel free to browse. My email is at the bottom. Let me know if you'd like me to make you any of these items in time for Christmas.

Fuzzy Cowls $15

Chunky Cabled Cowl $25

Lattice Cowl $15 (It's smaller, but it looks good with a coat on. Might work for a guy. I wouldn't know cause Zach refuses to wear scarves. If it's for a guy you can call it "The Chain Mail Cowl".)

Crazy Scarf $20 (This guy looks insane, but it's really easy. If I make it again I wanna do it in a heavier yarn.)

T-shirt necklaces $10 + shirt cost (You can bring me old shirts you wanna use. That's not weird.)

So that's my Friends & Family 2012 Christmas Shop. Unfortunately, I won't be shipping anything before Christmas, so you'll have to live around here. That's part of my "easing into it" plan. If you would like anything on here you can:
A. Leave a comment, or
B. Facebook message me, or
C. Call me, or
D. Email me at kara(dot)elizabeth24(at)gmail(dot)com*, or
E. All of the above  (Don't you dare.)

Merry Christmas!!!

*Why do people write their emails like that in blogs? Do you get spammed if you put your email address out there? I don't normally do things without knowing why, but I guess I'll go along with it.

an unlikely pairing

Dinner tonight: pasta with leftover chorizo and masalla sauce. Italy, Spain, and India. Are we TCKs or what?

It was delicious.
And it's probably the only time we'll have it cause there will never be that combination of leftovers again.

pinspiration

Some house things that have inspired me recently:

I'm really loving the look of etagere(s?).
You can display a lot, but they're not "visually heavy".

Have you ever seen a happier place to curl up with your book friends?

I aspire to be the kind of person who keeps an ornamental orange tree in her home.

I love how she's flooded the wall with artwork. It really takes the focus off of the tv.

Don't ya just love Pinterest?

oh, hanover

Just had kind of an ordeal trying to vote in good ole' Hanover, PA. After traveling to two different polls, we finally figured out that I was still registered at our old address... under my maiden name! I know I did all of the paperwork to change my registration both after we got married and when we changed our address. Oh well, still got in, and Little Missy was very patient.

Here are some comments she got from the overwhelmingly senior voting constituency in Hanover:

"Oh, he's a sweet little one, isn't he?" (To be fair, the bow was covered up by the car seat strap. However, she was wearing a purple hat, a pink blanket, and playing with a bright purple monkey.)

"In just 21 years you'll be able to do this!" (The 26th amendment was adopted in 1971.)

"I could just take you away and love you. Yes I could!" (Yeah... we're leaving.)

Oh! And I didn't get a sticker! Boo.

there's a cute baby wearing hats in this post

It's scarf season! And boot season, and sweater season, and, best of all, tights season. All the best clothes come out in the fall. Ask me how many scarves I have. 19. I keep them in a big wicker basket, the size you would use for laundry. I have a hamper full of scarves.

If I had my way it would never go above 65 degrees unless you were literally on the beach during your vacation. Then I could wear all of my favorite clothes AND never have to shave my legs (except for that one week at the beach). Scarf season also means my compulsion to crochet isn't completely ridiculous.

I'm not sure if anyone actually realizes how much I crochet. My husband works a lot, and he doesn't ask too many questions about the bins full of yarn stored around the house. It's my thing, okay? He plays Skyrim and Minecraft, and I do this. The only difference is I end up with a finished product that I'm sure will be useful to someone somewhere and he ends up with a virtual world made of blocks where pigs walk on ice, and monsters shoot bow and arrows, AND where the tops of trees won't fall down! (Minecraft widows, you know what I'm talking about)

Plus, my girlie sleeps 12 hours at night. 12 straight hours without waking up. You can set your clock by her. If I put her down at 7:30 she wakes up at 7:30am. Or it's 8 to 8.  It really is insane. So I have about 4 interruption-free hours in which to crochet every night.

The sheer volume of crocheted articles that have come from these hands is staggering, ridiculous, and a little scary. We were invited to a lot of weddings when we first got married. I made 11 blankets in two years. ELEVEN. Most every family member has gotten some sort of scarf as a gift. I've made dozens of hats, for adults and kids. I've made socks for Zach. I made one glove for myself (never got around to making its mate). I made our Christmas stockings. Once I even crocheted a bikini for someone's bachelorette party. I am not kidding.

And this isn't me bragging. It's me confessing. Because I Can't Help It.

I can't help it. I crave it. You know how when you're in the middle of a book, but you have to get stuff done, and all day you just keep thinking about it? Or how some people are constantly checking their phones? That's how it is with crochet for me. It's an itch. Plus I just can't watch tv without my hands moving, so it's either that or eat (and my post-baby body has kindly requested that I not do that).

Three unfinished crochet projects. Jaina's stocking, a scarf I'll
probably never finish, and what-started-as-a-blanket-but-I'm-
about-to-run-out-of-yarn-so-it'll-probably-be-a-massive-cowl.

Back in February I was put on partial bed-rest for the remainder of my pregnancy. Talk about itchy fingers. Eight hours a day of HGTV is only interesting for so long. I made so much baby stuff. And now it's finally cold enough for her to wear it!

This is the Bumpy Bobbles Beanie (pattern here)

"Mother, I do not appreciate you postponing my dinner to take pictures of me."

"Don't worry about it, darling. Here, where this crown. Now you're a princess!"

Baby Uggs! I make her wear these on a regular basis. Not sure where the pattern is from.

Very weirded out by Daddy's faces behind the camera.

And my favorite mousey hat. She'll fit in this better by the end of the winter.

She doesn't mind it now, but just wait till she's a teenager.

"Honey! I made this scarf for you!"
"Mom, it's July."

But for now, she's pretty cool with it.

And can you blame her? She looks fabulous.
